The Chief Technology Office and Innovation Think Tank at Siemens Healthcare, Germany has invited students from all disciplines to participate in a 3 months innovation camp titled “The Future of Healthcare. The submitted ideas focused on the effects of technological advances and changes in society on today’s global healthcare systems. Submission deadline has lapsed and 20 finalists have been invited to attend the innovation camp in Erlangen, Germany.

This selection was based on an international contest. 265 applications from 31 countries were evaluated by an interdisciplinary jury. Based on the quality of submissions it was decided to increase the number of finalists to 20.

We have personally communicated the results to the top 20 finalists. In case the finalists can not join the “Innovation Camp” for some reasons, we will offer the opportunity to the candidates in the waiting list.

InnovationsThinkTank

Innovation Think Tank at Siemens Healthcare, Germany, organized an international student competition “Be an inventor opportunity” with a focus on new ideas/improvements on medical technologies and their supporting infrastructures. 16 finalists were given the “Be an inventor opportunity”, a unique chance to work on real-life problems with Siemens inventors in a highly stimulating environment for a period of three months. Cost of travelling and accommodation along with a stipend was covered by Siemens.

Because of the quality of submissions for the “Be an inventor opportunity-competition” and the decision of the Innovation Think Tank Jury, the number of finalists was raised to 16 members from initially planned 10 members.

The finalists worked on multiple projects for a period of 3 months within the innovation camp under close supervision of Siemens researchers and innovators in Siemens facilities in Kemnath, Erlangen and Forchheim, Germany.

Based on a decision by the Innovation Think Tank Jury and due to the collaborative atmosphere at the innovation camp, it was decided to raise the prize money to €16000 from the initially planned €10000. As the students worked on multiple projects, it was also decided by the jury to divide the prize money equally among the participants. The participants were given a “Young innovative student award for Innovation Think Tank Summer Camp 2011” by the Prof. Hermann Requardt, CEO of Siemens Healthcare and Mr. Roland Köppel, CEO of Components and Vacuum Technologies, Siemens Healthcare. The ceremony was held at the middle of the program in Erlangen, Germany. Since the projects were still worked on within the innovation camp and multiple students worked on every project, only the initial results of the projects were rated as 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

The final evaluation of the projects and the students took place at the end of the program. Siemens Healthcare awarded an additional financial incentive to the participants based on their contribution in the individual projects, as well as the implementation level of the projects.

Background

Innovation Think Tank (ITT) is a platform for stimulating interdisciplinary innovations within Siemens AG. It was founded by Sultan Haider, Siemens’ youngest Principal Key Expert, who was awarded by Siemens Healthcare’s Executive Committee for his outstanding innovation track record with over 200 inventions to date. Haider heads the ITT organization, which has currently over 3200 members, and is based in Siemens Healthcare’s Business Unit Components and Vacuum Technology in Erlangen, Germany.

ITT is based on the idea of collaborative innovations. Tapping the potential of the existing multi-disciplinary know-how, intercultural diversity, and age diversity (age group 15 to 65) of Siemens worldwide and its partners, ITT solves interdisciplinary problems and generates new ideas. With the regular brain-storming workshop, challenges are offered to the community for discussion. Members can choose as many problems as they want, work in a collaborative way without defined rules and guidelines. Free thinking and knowledge exchange between challenge providers and challenge solvers often lead to unconventional solutions.

Regular “Innovation camps” are based on international competitions awarded fellowships with focus on engineering or strategy. The selected candidates are invited to work in a highly stimulating innovative environment with Siemens innovators and key experts and to create “out of box” solutions.

We have Innovation Think Tank in order to
  • network those taking part across the various disciplines, cultures and generations
  • increase the diversity of opinions represented
  • make use of the enormous potential offered by all those taking part
  • to tap into the experience and ideas of everyone involved
  • solve concrete problems.

In short: to drive forward innovation.
